  1. The strong take from the weak. If Australia wouldn't take it, it would be Indonesia or China. Timor can't afford to exploit it's own resources, so it'd sell out the rights to.... probably Australia first.

  2. Timor would never turn out like Singapore. Just having oil doesn't make a country prosperous.

  3.  @GAndreC  Except they didn't, because they were a racist, fascist, military state bent on exploitative colonialism. They did what no one thought possible, which was to make the Europeans look good. They didn't want a coalition of various Asian nations, freed from Europeans. Rather, they wanted their own empire.

  4.  @charles8769  Well, people do. China does it on a daily basis. Of course, unlike Australia, they do little more than pay lip-service to morality. At the end of the day, I'm sure everyone here would prefer being colonized by the Aussies than the Chinese.
