The Preamble to the US Constitution pretty much describes the moral imperative of Socialism:
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Priority #1 is to form a more perfect Union for We the People, not build an economy that only serves a few.
Priority #2 is establish Justice and is why there are so many peaceful protests on the street.
Priority #3 is to insure domestic tranquility, also why peaceful protesters are on the street.
Now, Priorities #4 & #5 do both sound awfully similar to (and were seeds for) later paradigms of Karl Marx, pen-pal of Abraham Lincoln, and other progressive thinkers.

So politically 'Conservative' interpretations of the Constitution are not actually trying to conserve the philosophical foundation of the Constitution.
The word "Socialism" wasn't invented until long after the Preamble and the Constitution were written.
The First Amendment makes much more sense in light of the Preamble. The whole "redress of grievances" is an allusion to the Declaration of Independence if the philosophical priorities mentioned in the Preamble aren't being adequately met. If people are protesting or even rioting in the streets in mass numbers, who's responsibilities and who's rights are made clear:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
