In the DVD JJ explains the Star Wars references quite a bit. Its practically impossible to make a space movie without some Star Wars reference. Mainly the fast pace of Star Wars was something that worked well so he implemented it. And maybe its just returning the favor, George Lucas himself was a fan of Star Trek and got a lot of his ideas from TOS. We've never known how Kirk and Spock met or how they became like Alexander and Hephaestion. I liked the thought of them meeting in conflict.

The neat thing about this theme is that its exactly the gift director JJ has given to himself. Just like the characters in his film, JJ has gone into the past and changed history. The message to take from this is that despite all the disasters and all the incorrect choices we make directly after catastrophic events, we are not controlled by history. We can change direction. In short, not be the most cerebral ST ever, but it has re-energized the franchise and hope for the future.

Fine. You all want some moral perspective on the new film? Here goes: (Published in the July/August 2009 Humanist by Nick Farrantello) Thematically the film is all about choices. Over and over, characters are faced with making choices that will not only shape the direction of their own lives but also the direction of the entire world around them.

@skip8619 It would not have suceeded had it been presented any other way. The sequels will deal with more traditional Trek themes though, if its any consolation to you. The new movie did have a moral lesson if you're willing to look for it.

(continued) For Kirk the moment of truth comes after losing a particularly nasty bar fight. He is given a choice to continue on the self-destructive path his life has taken as a result of his fathers death, or make something of himself by joining the Starfleet. For Spock its the moment he must choose between the Starfleet or the Vulcan Science Academy, where he is told hes been accepted despite the handicap of being half human.

@MoriSempaisNeko I am a big fan of TOS and Roddenberry. AND I believe Roddenberry would have enjoyed the new film. Roddenberry himself said you could over-intellectualize ST all you wanted bu the series was a large part about action. Whena sked about the future of ST, Rodenberry said he hoped someone would come along and do it all again bigger and better, and he wished them luck doing so. Like it or not, its what J.J did just that.

In another instance cadet Kirk is presented with a computer simulation that doesnt allow for the opportunity to win. Confronted with this no-win scenario, Kirk chooses to reprogram the computers thereby giving him the choice of victory. At the climax of the film, even the bad guy Nero is given the option of being saved by the Enterprise or being crushed to death in a black hole. (You probably have a problem when you cant see a clear choice there.)
