@goodfodder oh really!? and u think that the brilliant, best-in -the-biz engineers are BMW (known for making some of the best engines ever made in the past 20 yrs alone!) didn't figure out exactly what wear factors etc would be happening as the engine was started by the load demand suddenly placed as the car starts accelerating harder, such as getting onto hghway? They arelady factored all those issues in and they know how to and when to start the engine. Maybe instead of giving your random opinion without any information as to the design, u can look up the design system first and then comment.

@Blondul11 no, constant speed or rpm of an engine is not good for an engine for very extended periods at relatively higher loads (including on hwy at high RPM) This IS an issue during new engine break-in period. So, yes, idling for hours on end is quite bad for engines, throughout their life.

@Blondul11 ECU's are not programmed to adjust idle speed to optimize oil pressure. That's now how it works. Oil pressure better be decent enough at the typical RPM the car is designed to start at. This is not rocket engineering like some of you imagine.

@mikerobinson8734 yes it DOES go bad by changing viscosity, ie getting thicker due to heat damage to the oil. As the captain in the show NCIS Nola, says to his crew " learn things"
