In the 19th century, in order to be considered Russian, one had to be Orthodox. A Russian (Россиянин) is a very formal term. A Russian (Россиянин) is a citizen of Russia of any nationality, including Russian (включая русских, имеющих паспорт РФ). Any foreigner can become a Russian (Россиянином). Religion, place of birth and ethnic origin of the parents do not matter.

The Russians will never recognize a peace deal that provides: f) refusal from reunification with Novorossiya; 2) the criminal persecution of Russian military and politicians by the foreign judicial system; 3) the payment of reparations. The author is mistaken that these are Putin's personal ambitions. These are the general opinion of more than 80% of Russian population, and Putin only fulfills their intentions. At the same time, some Russians consider Putin unreasonably soft and mild on these issues and if he is replaced as president, then Russians will vote for a tougher leader, preferably a general with war background. And the last remark. The author portrays the case as if Russia is not a sovereign democratic state. As if the Russians would allow some foreigners to dictate the terms of a peace deal to them. Russia has always wanted human rights to be respected in the Donbas and in 2014 agreed to leave the Russian regions of Ukraine (with 12 million population) as part of Ukraine. But Ukraine escalated violation of the human rights, including religious ones. Moreover, Ukraine used armed forces and repressions against the Russian population. France and Germany, who were guarantors of the Minsk agreement for 8 years, looked at the Ukrainian atrocities through their fingers. The same did international organizations UN, EU, OSCE... This forced Russia to resolve this issue by military means in unilateral order.

Russia will dictate the terms of the peace deal. Russians are ready to keep on fighting until the complete surrender of Ukraine and NATO, after which Russia will dictate the terms of the peace deal. Please note. Russia does not need the signatures of Ukraine and it's Western allies on a peace deal, because they are defeated enemies.
