@BastiaanvandeWerk In this approach we can say that all Germanic tribes were brothers among themselves with Baltic and Slavic (Balto-Slavic) tribes as cousins. But the population of Finland is much more interesting in relation to ethnogenesis because it’s a unique mixture of the oldest Scandinavian population (we don’t even know what kind of language they spoke), Germanic (Swedes) and Ugric tribes, and Finland was the closest place to them all to meet each other, to share common conditions of life that shaped cultural proximity. 😊 So Finns can be cousins to Scandinavian Vikings more than German, Baltic and Slavic tribes of Central Europe.

@jturtle5318 Nope! Kievan Rus was a state founded by Scandinavian warriors upon request of alliance of some Slavic, Baltic and Finno-Ugric tribes that were in need of big state with an independent non-local ruler. Vikings - were the best choice for that moment in History. And those Vikings adopted local culture and language very quickly.

17:45 I don’t think we’ll ever know who exactly were that Vikings that had come to Rus’, but most probably they were Swede. Due to the legend they were somehow related with danish Hrørek, but this is very controversial theory mostly because of dating (that is imprecise and conventional), and according to the DNA research of a number of rulers in Rus (in a long distance), they share east Scandinavian DNA (haplogroup N1a1a1a1a1a1a7a from Oleneostrovsky burial ground) that occurs among the population of Sweden, Finland and Baltic countries.
