  2. As things begin to fall apart more rapidly, people get scared and want someone to hold it together and make it like it "used to be" (idealized past). Even if the means are draconian. Anything to avoid the uncomfortable feelings of being swept along on unstoppable momentum into collapse. Having someone disenfranchised to blame is frosting on the cake. That some people profit from it all is horrific and evil.
