So true, and I had no idea until I was too far in to stop, LOL! $250 pack (one of three, each around that lol), $300 sleeping bag, $150 pad, $100 water filter, $100 belt knife, $350 Garmin, $600 FLIR etc. Not to mention boots, socks, hats, gloves, fleece & merino clothing. Day use fees, gasoline, vehicle upkeep, food, fishing gear (dont' get me started!) and weapon/license. Over the course of the last 4 years, I have a great system for me. I use, or at least take with me, my pack every weekend when we go out into the woods. I do about 4 overnights a year in my tent, and a few more in my Aquaquest tarp ($150). The Garmin and FLIR I use every weekend.
