@heidimadeleine8808 An African-American who went to Sweden almost cried when she was referred to simply as an American for the first time in her life. She appreciated the fact that she was just seen simply as an American and not defined by the prefix African... No, you didn't read the conversation. I assume you told them you were British or whatever and that was the end of it. You weren't questioned repeatedly about where you were 'really' from even after telling people you didn't have records of where your family came from before they were exported to the Caribbean by slave traders, then settled in Britain where you were eventually born...

@1Grande55 The royal Family have German ancestry Phillip was 3/4rs German and spoke German fluently, the Queen was a quarter German. They all descend from the Habsburg dynasty that ruled Europe for centuries and married their families into each other...

@kemibello6812 No, her ancestors were transported to the Caribbean which makes that her descent, her heritage is African (but since her slave ancestors had no documentation, she has no idea of her actual country of origin) her Nationality is British. She was repeatedly asked what part of Africa she was from, to which she couldn't answer. The answer I have given you is in Ms Fulani's own words (paraphrased)... The full exchange of the conversation is: Lady SH: “Where are you from?” Ms Fulani: “Sistah Space.” SH: “No where do you come from? Ms Fulani: “We’re based in Hackney.” SH: “No, what part of Africa are YOU from?” Ms Fulani: “I don’t know, they didn’t leave any records.” SH: “Well, you must know where you’re from, I spent time in France. Where are you from?” Ms Fulani: “Here, UK” SH: “No, but what Nationality are you?” Ms Fulani: “I am born here and am British.” SH: “No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?” Ms Fulani: “‘My people’, lady, what is this?” SH: “Oh I can see I am going to have a challenge getting you to say where you’re from. When did you first come here?” Ms Fulani: “Lady! I am a British national, my parents came here in the 50’s when…” SH: “Oh, I knew we’d get there in the end, you’re Caribbean!” Ms Fulani: “No lady, I am of African heritage, Caribbean descent and British nationality.” SH: “Oh so you’re from….”

@NoLefTurnUnStoned. Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, those commenting who obviously haven't read the transcript are therefore speaking from ignorance rather than knowledge. I clearly stated Philip's ancestry, not his Nationality. Nationality is an absolute, ethnicity is not and can therefore be mixed. Even someone with dual nationality is 100% both nationalities...

@fionam.1784 Her ancestors were taken from Africa as slaves (Possibly by Hussey's ancestors as it was the British Royal Family who condoned and profited from it during the 1600s), she didn't have documentation of which part of Africa she was from so how could she answer the question Hussey asked: "What part of Africa are you from?" If you read the transcript and can't see the assumptions, pressure and how uncomfortable that would make someone feel then you lack logic and compassion...

Both her parents were from the Caribbean so assumptions made about her name and clothing proving her Nigerian or West African heritage are irrelevant guesswork... The common practice with released slaves was to pick their own name when emancipated. Thank you for the continual circular debate based on guesswork, may I suggest re-reading the transcript...Ngozi Fulani herself describes her heritage as African - which as you know is a continent, if she could be more precise she obviously would have been and wouldn't have told Lady Hussey that she had no records of exactly where her ancestors came from.

Proving debate is as much use as a rubber beak to a woodpecker. My culture and language were stolen and my people fought against slavery. I'll let Ms Fulani know that she should be proud, not shy away from, or deny the heritage that she is unaware of because it was stolen from her when her ancestors were taken to the Caribbean as slaves... I'll let the self-congratulatory people who don't understand the story get back to blaming Ms Fulani for not knowing what her heritage is, through no fault of her own... Despite the fact that Ms Fulani has a Master of Arts in African studies... PS search for articles on the rise of the far right and ask yourself why you think that is something that wouldn't concern me...

TheAymsa wrote "I've always taken great pride in answering that particular question. I immediately say where my parents / Grandparents came from! Would you like to explain how this applied to Ms Fulani who despite not knowing her specific heritage has done a Master of Arts in African studies? Do you think you could at least admit that it's erroneous and that your support of that statement lacks logic? I've been active against the far right for decades and they are using this to further their cause and saying quite vile things about Ms Fulani because of the same misconception this thread suffers from.

I don't have records of where my ancestors came from because your ancestors didn't give me them when they transported my ancestors to the Caribbean as human cargo... They eventually came to Britain and gave birth to me and so I am British and any further questions just remind me that your ancestors owned mine... That's what should have happened...
