Energy production should be a priority for the government. Instead, the Tories sold it all off under the guise of privatisation and now we have a cartel extorting the British people. The government also cut funding for renewables and took us out of the EU where we had cheaper prices as part of a trading block. This is a serious situation that has been allowed to happen by our reliance on other nations to meet much of our energy needs. Completely avoidable if we were self-sufficient in energy...

@Nico Fourie Don't talk nonsense. We have a large river network, a massive coast, plenty of wind, plenty of sun and hydrothermal energy. We have more than enough sources as we are already 46% powered by renewables, despite massive cuts to green energy over the past decade. We are paying for selling off our North sea, energy grid and a lack of funding for renewables - IE privatisation... We should be 100% renewable and 100% self-sufficient instead of being subject to extortion by an energy cartel...

@Nico Fourie This is the opposite. We are reliant on Norway for our energy. Norway are 100% renewable and sell us their excess. Seriously, couldn't be more wrong...

@Nico Fourie PS There are many countries that are 100% renewable. All use their different strengths to generate electricity. "Albania, Bhutan, Congo, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Iceland, Namibia, Nepal, Norway and Paraguay: these are the countries whose electric power generation comes from 97 to 100% renewable energy sources. Several African countries are on the list, along with countries in South America and the Caribbean."

@adam6543 Tories have cut renewables, cut funding for development and Labour are not in power so stop the whataboutery. This is all down to Tory incompetence. Including Brexit, billions lost to fraud and our reliance on Norway and Russia for our energy needs. Fracking provides so little at such risk that it's pointless mentioning... Go read about geopolitics and look at countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark and see how the Scandanavian model of Social Democracy provides a much higher standard of living...

The chair of the BBC is Richard Sharp long term Tory donor of over £400,000, Robbie Gibb who was the former director of communications in No 10 for Theresa May is on the board at the BBC and Tory donor Catherine Baxendale is on the panel picking BBC board members. The Director-general of the BBC is former Tory candidate Tim Davie.

Peter Hicks Yes they made many cuts across the board. However, the stats I have read most frequently is that renewables supply up to 46% of our daily requirements. And yes most of the excess is made up by Norway through the Langeled pipeline or Britpipe.

@petercollins7848 Everything you just said is true of privatisation but also far more expensive as prices prove. Energy companies now have a monopoly and are price gauging their customers while making excessive profits. On top of that we pay them subsidies, corporate welfare and tax relief as well as initiatives for cleaner energy. It costs the taxpayer over £100 billion per annum in corporate welfare and subsidies alone, while tax losses are between £40-120 billion per annum. Russia supplies less than 3% of our energy and we are 46% renewable energy, despite the huge cuts to funding...

@petercollins7848 lol our prices have gone up far higher than the rest of Europe who buy in bulk as a trade group, many countries in the world are self-sufficient and so aren't affected. My comments stand, your opinionated beliefs lack facts...

@Gnomezonbacon We are already 46% reliant on renewables even considering the modest renewable energy budget was slashed repeatedly. We have a bounty of sources from solar, geothermal, tides, wind, rivers etc. Why would any country not be self-sufficient in energy in this day and age?
