  1. They're not necessarily programming AI, although that is relevant in a small way. With AI the main technique is learning, the AI is given text, mug shots, pictures etc to study and then using the algorithms determines how to achieve a goal. For instance to simulate human text which is done by training the AI on conversations, or using literature to train the AI to write stories. With photos and art the techniques are very similar. The AI is given millions of photos of faces within subcategories and then compares to any new faces to determine the most likely subcategory. Yes, programming is a part of it, but a lot of it is down to the training and the accuracy of the training material.
