I don't think he was actually depressed. More likely disappointed to see people so easily deceived to such a obvious fraud. I think its depressing or perhaps just saddening to see such gullibility on display and profound lack of critical thinking.

Jack Bran Hold on there Jackie Boy, your pistol has gone off in your holster. Prof. Dawkins is very far away from idiocy, he was calling out all non evidence based beliefs, he only mentions Mormons because it's more obviously a fraud than the others.

Jack Bran Well yes they are all fabrications. Mormonism is just more obviously a fraud because its so much more recent. Not sure if you understand the passing of time, maybe you were not in school that week.

Whilst Newton didn't explain the cause of gravity, he did perfectly describe the effects of gravity mathematically. His laws really are laws for the macro world.

@huhwah5387 curious to know - have any real Mormons seen the book of Mormon the musical?

@philossifer6252 Not a bold statement really, nobody thinks they are in a cult when they are in a cult. Not actually my burden to prove the negative but the evidence against religion is low hanging fruit. 1) In ~200,000 years of our species and many more as hominids why do the main religions today come about in the last few thousand years. Answer because the religions and superstitions of the past are forgotten, just as the ones currently fashionable will be. 2) Divine texts from a omnipotent being? In fact full of errors and contradictions. The zeitgeist has long since moved and followers cherry pick their relevance. The texts have the penmanship of iron age goat herders because thats is who wrote them. 3) Religion is about dominion over others. Always was and still is. Same as everything else. 4) Each religion claims to be the truth, each religion has branches within just as you would expect from an artificial construct. Followers of a religion don't believe most religions. They believe theirs is the true religion, how convenient. 5) If they are all false except one religion. Say its Christianity. Seems slightly unfair to face hell for having been born into a Hindu family 6,000 miles away and never hearing of Jesus. More postcode lottery than divinity. Bored yet?

@philossifer6252 Oh dear, I appear to have failed in convincing you. Of course we both know that no evidence I could have presented would suffice, you would refute everything in the same sloppy dismissive manner. Now your turn. Prove to me that religion is not man made. I will be kind as to let you decide which out the thousands is actually true. I expect empirical evidence and not appeals to authority.

@CheeseSteakJimi Your vague vacuous comment does not contribute anything to the discussion. The Internet is already at 97% insults, civil discourse is something of an anomaly. Maybe try stating your position then following with reason and logic that could be presented as evidence.
3
@CheeseSteakJimi I have not looked into mormonism the least bit but if they had 'real proof' that Jesus visited the Americans, I would have heard about it. If you know differently please link.
3
@CheeseSteakJimi Good point Jim, what would it take to prove this. I must admit I am quite a skeptical person, this is an extraordinary claim so the evidence had better be pretty good indeed for me to accept the claim and reject deceit. Since I have yet to see any evidence of any divinity concerning Jesus Christ, or divinity full stop; guess that would a good place to start. In the absence of any evidence I shall utilise Occom's razor and plump that all claims are fabrications of men. Supporting this conclusion is the availability of means, motive and I need not invoke the supernatural. There are evidence based explanations to the origins of life, our evolution and our place in the cosmos. When compared to impoverished fairytales of supernatural angels and immaculate conceptions you can see the inventors of religion lack imagination as much as understanding.
3
@CheeseSteakJimi I don't find that at all satisfactory. Simply conjuring up the most complex, most intellectual and super magical being, then insert in at the beginning as a literal deus ex machina. Aside from no actual evidence of this, this creates an infinite regress - who created this God?

Jack Storm Are you on medication? or just that incredulous by nature. People have tried to explain it to you but you seem unable to listen.

Professor Dawkins' made scientific discovery and education his lifes work. His contribution to mankinds understanding of the world is large as is his resume. At this time of his life he was especially weary of explaining truth to the blissfully delusional.

Unfalsifiability isn't a strength is a weakness.

These two concepts are not mutually exclusive. You can live in a constitutional (codified rights) democratic (voted by the people) republic (Non monarchy).

Hmm satire... https://youtu.be/U2mqFOB-7EQ

Kwizera Moses Care to expand on that and actually make a coherent point?
1
Kwizera Moses You need to google Scientologist. Dawkins was a eminent scientist, no small difference.
1
Kwizera Moses He was old. I don't know you but already you make me bitter with your stupid personal attacks and belligerent grasp of factual accuracy.

Jesus is a mythical talisman. An idea for people to cling to qhen they need change in their lives.

1) The latter day saints are a blatant fraud. 2) Prof. Dawkins is a world renowned author that has literally changed the world through his work in phenotypic effects. 3) The book of Mormon is 90mins of belly laughter.
