  1.  @bachempenius  In New England, ice harvesting was an important business back in the 1800's. They used a large hand saw to cut blocks from ponds, and stored the ice through most of the summer by insulating it with sawdust.

  3. My bud worked for a power company. Years ago he told me that transformers have an incredibly long lead time to make, ship & replace.

  4. Any electric motor draws more juice on startup. That's why the switch on a cheap window fan goes: Off - Hi - Med - Low. When you switch it on, the first detent is High, and gives the motor the boost it needs.
