@Brandon Liechti You need to be aware that the problems with plastic have been overstated and the alternatives can be more damaging to the environment. Eriksen et al (2014) discovered 250,000 tons in the ocean. Although that seems a lot, except when you consider the ocean is 135,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons. It was 0.1% of annual plastic production. Plus they found 100 times less microplastic than expected. Several groups of scientists (e.g. Ward et al, 2019) have found some plastics e.g. Styrofoam, readily disintegrate in seawater to organic carbon and CO2.
The supposedly environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic are not. Banning plastic bags results in more pollution because of the greater amount of energy needed to produce alternatives. Glass bottles consume upto 250% more energy than plastic ones in production, and paper bags would have to be used 43 times to have a smaller impact on the environment. Highly unlikely.
