@antipropo461 this is twisting of history. I guess they thought you this in Russian school? The USSR attacked neutral Finland on November 30th 1939. after the USSR was already involved in the invasion of Poland and the occupation of the neutral baltic states. it would also take Besserabia and Bucovina from Romania. all according to the plan they made with Germany in the Molotov-ribbentrop pact. Finland defended itself bravely and managed to remain independent but had to give up Karelia. it was this war, the winter war, which caused Finland to become a co belligerent of Germany (they were never part of the axis powers). When Germany invaded the USSR, Finland started the continuation war to regain it's lost territories. it would occupy those and didn't move any further much to the chagrin of the Germans. Eventually the Finns lost and had to give up Petsamo. Again Russia claiming to be a victim whilst they caused a country to be against them. it's a clear twisting of history to say the Finns just joined Germany and to leave out the fact the USSR attacked them first.

@LactoseTheIntolerant article 5. very simple. NATO supports Ukraine but is not involved in the war. Finland and Sweden don't want to be supported by NATO, but want NATO to join the war on their side if they get invaded so they don't have to fight alone like Ukraine does now. This way Russia will know that attacking Finland or Sweden will draw in all of Europe, Canada and most importantly the US. which is, as you can imagine, a huge deterrent. not to mention the US would probably also call in his Major Non NATO allies into the war like Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea (who would not be obliged the join). so yeah it's not really the same thing as just being supported by NATO or to be a part of NATO.
