@Niclaas1999 lol my country for sure is more free than Russia lol. I support German rearmament. I say so as a Dutchman. Which in on itself says enough if you know anything about the Dutch-German dynamic.

@taraswertelecki3786 for us in the Netherlands it was also a weird idea to have Germany rearm itself. Considering their history and the occupation of our country. As well as the Rotterdam blitz. However, we also understand that it is time to move on. This Germany is not the same as Nazi Germany and they have taken their responsibility. That said we shouldn't forget the lessons of what facism can do to a country and it's people. Which is exactly why they have to rearm. As we cannot let the same history repeat but now with Russia being the facist state. I think overall it is a lesson. Facism is pure evil and what we have seen now is that it can rise anywhere and so we should always remain vigilant. First it were the axis, now Russia and in the future it will be another country. Could be any one. It is our task as humanity to not let it root itself as it did in Germany.

@tooltalk I would ask them to look at our own history books as we do the exact same thing. Where in the Dutch history books will you read about the exploitation of the Dutch East Indies and the punitive expeditions that destroyed entire tribes.. I didn't learn this as a child. I needed to actually study history to learn this. Where is the US will you read about the actual genocide they committed against the native Americans. The Spanish with the native populations in the Americas, the British and their empire, the Russians who don't teach their children about the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, their joint invasion op Poland and the fact they wanted to join the Axis, or about the holodomor... and I can go on and on. Germany has been remarkably honest about it's misdeeds. Every country on the planet, with maybe the exception of Germany, whitewashes their history. Including yours.

@tooltalk the history we get about the Vernenigde Oost Indische Companie (Dutch East India company for you)is mostly a positive one yes )) also the Rawagede massacre among others.. during the Indonesian War of Independence or as it was known up until a few years ago in the Netherlands :"De politionele acties" with only know the use of "Indonesiche onafhankelijkheidsoorlog" being used a bit more. Have the Netherlands committed the same atrocities as the Germans? No, but we weren't angels either. Burning down entire villages and murdering the entire male population. There is actually no debate to include more about the use of slavery and the colonial exploitation as, again, history books on schools are mostly positive about this time period. With a part of it being "De Goudeneeuw" or Dutch Golden Age. But eeh what do I know as an actual Dutch history teacher having to use the history books. But I guess the arrogant American knows more about it than the guy using the books and being born and raised in the Netherlands. They are about to finally change this as there was, again, almost no focus on this at all. We also see this with the government as a whole, we are finally truly acknowledging and reckoning with our past. Took us quite some time too. To be clear with history books I was talking about what we teach our children. Not what you learn at higher education. As in higher education these things come up. Your point about the Dutch not being like that anymore is exactly the point with the Japanese too. They are not like that anymore either. Not to mention that the Netherlands have the mentality of the Koopman (merchant) and the dominee (Protestant priest). My country will lecture other countries what to do (Rutte is particularly good at it) and how to be morally correct like the Dominee. But money gets involved the country forgets the morals and all is about the money. we become the merchant. Times change mate, history is, well, history. Facism is on the rise again, this time in Russia. But even in my country (which is the Netherlands) there is a party with some facist traits that is followed by quite a part of the population. Let's stop pretending we are better. We are not. Does it give this for example the Russians the excuse to invade? No ofcourse not. It's a good thing that we are supporting Ukraine. Russia is the new facist state and it must be stopped. But what history teaches us, is that the Japanese and Germans are not unique in their capability to do horrific things. In China there are the "re-education" camps. Russia is doing that bs in Ukraine. America with it's oil wars. Every country has done, and is capable of doing horrific things. Your society created Trump for example and mine Baudet. Every country could do these horrible things if they let fascism take root and get the wrong leaders in powers. With obviously the larger powers having more potential for evil for the simple fact that they have more power.

@tooltalk read history from the perspective of the Native Americans, Indonesians, Afro-Americans, Africans etc. And you'd be surprised in what way they see your country. Which is exactly the point I am trying to make to how you look at Japan. You earlier comment about they just needing to stick to Manga exactly proved that they have changed..

@heinzdoof1575 as a Dutchman I'd say that Germany has clearly learned from what happend. They have assumed responsibility for what they have done. And although I don't want to admit it, they have become our greatest friend. The spiritual successor of the facist powers is not modern Germany, nor Japan. It is the Russian Federation. Anyone who is vaguely aware can see that.

@tooltalk when the South of the US stops honouring the Confederate States (including the use of their flags) you can start lecturing other countries. But this is exactly what I mean with hypocrisy. And again Japan doing it is not good at all, but it sadly is a human thing. As the use of the Confederate flag and the fact that there are statues of Confederate generals, disgusts me as much as Japan white washing its history does.

I am glad that Germany and Japan are militarizing again. They are not the same states they used to be. They have taken responsibility for actions and have been punished for it. Facism once controlled their countries, now this evil has taken root in Russia. I gladly have the Germans and Japanese on our side against this evil.

@sarantis1995 the Greeks were the basis and beginning of Western Civilisation. As a student of history I was always fascinated with ancient Greece from the Persian Wars through the hellenic period and the Eastern Roman/Byzantine periods. I agree with you yeah, but not all our countrymen would haha. I think we can use our history as examples of things we should and shouldn't do. My country was involved in the slave trade and colonialism. I am not responsible for it but I am responsible, together with my countrymen, to make sure it will not happen again. The same with the current generation of Germans in regards to ww2.

I doubt you learn every detail of the bs your country was doing in Iraq and Afghanistan or its other adventures. Again I don't agree with the Japanese denying certain aspects of their history. But I think we should stop behaving like we are all so amazing and paragons of virtue here. As the thing that other countries are right about, is that the west is hypocrite is some cases. Also no they don't increase tensions by defending themselves. Every country in the world has the right in the face of external threats to defend themselves. That includes Germany and Japan.

@robsmith4937 I consider myself free. Also you have the right and freedom to be wrong. I wouldn't care so much about "everyone telling me I was wrong". They have the right to consider me being wrong and if I'm right, why the f would I care what they say? And if I was truly wrong, well I made a mistake from which I can learn. In either case I won't be prosecuted for my own opinion and have gained from it. This in contrast to certain other countries. If you can't handle a majority disagreeing with you or people telling you are wrong, well that has nothing to do with freedom, that has more to do with yourself to be honest. Not meant to offend but that is how I see it.

In the case with that teacher, he is just an a**hole. Sister had such thing as well. Fact you could overturn this by threatening to go to principal actually shows that the teacher was in the wrong and that the principal would have agreed with that. Again maybe you should spend some time in authoritarian or totalitarian states. You'd notice the difference. My mom, whom herself came from then still communist Czechoslovakia reminds me of this. Also to be very clear, freedom of speech too has limits.

@johney3734 who was our mate in ww2? The allies are still your mates. The USSR was an ally by circumstance but actually joined the war in 1939 on the side of Germany against Poland and wanted to join the axis... they were never our mates. Just a necessary evil. And our mate the Republic of China, still is our mate. It is just now quite smaller..

We are constantly in contact with German people and I in Germany atleast once every week not to mention the fact I have travelled the country quite some times and know people there. You would be surprised but not everyone has such narrow knowledge of the wider world outside their country as you do. As, in contract to what your name suggests, earlier comments of you show that you are probably Russian. And I'd bet you're one that has never even been outside of Russia.
