  5.  @nikolasvenetidis9608  "they can back pay NATO for the 60+ years they claimed neutrality", yeah sure let's punish countries for having wanted to stay neutral in the cold war, seems fair. Do you also know why Finland was neutral during those times? I'd advise you to open a history book and maybe you should look up the term "Finlandization" as well. Finland and Sweden in my opinion are welcome in the alliance. A alliance created by the Americans btw )) About it being not the US's problem, well actually it is. The current situation in Ukraine is the direct result of the geopolitical "game" that the US and Russia are playing with Ukraine caught in the middle. Then again during the USSR, both powers also fought each other in other counties and continents and never directly. So next time the US decides to go bomb or invade some Middle Eastern or North African country we can also say "well this is not our problem?". It's called being allies and it works both ways, considering the US has dragged us into so many bs situations. This combined with the fact that, luckily, US policy makers can actually think further ahead than you. Any idea what the result for the US would be in Europe would be dominated by the Russians? Exactly. The way you think once dominated European and American minds during the interwar years "why die for Danzig (Gdansk)?". This passive way of thinking has cost millions of lives. About "most liberal Europeans slamming the US" learn to be able to accept criticism mate. People criticize my country too and often they do have a point. You can actually learn from it or you just ignore it. It's that simple. Europe and the US have been friends for such a long time, friends do criticise each other too. I mean the constant shootings for example, it is a problem is it not? Ofcourse people will talk about it for example or the US's foreign wars. At the same point my country should finally spend the 2% of gdp which is agreed to for its military. When the US complains about it, people here say well yeah they're actually right. I hope that with your friends you are actually capable of taking criticism, it makes people and nations grow.

  7.  @thedeepAlcove  about the not expanding eastward thing, which shows me that you are actually Russian as it is one of its main propaganda points, well there is no l proof of it. No written treaty or commitment. So if it is true, it was naive of Gorbachev and scummy of the West. But we don't know as everyone can say anything without proof. Then there is the matter of the state that would have made this agreement (if it actually happened) not existing anymore. The very argument Russia likes to make itself (we made this agreement with another government and don't recognize the current one). About Russia wanting to join NATO, that is correct. But Russia, just like any other state, has to meet the requirements. It didn't. Russia just expected to be invited, instead of having to apply themselves and get through the application process. As in typical display of Russian arrogance and their misplaced sense of superiority, they considered themselves to be above the other nations and didn't want to wait in line. Not to mention the fact that what they wanted was a European security system without the US, aka Russia wanted to replace the US. As a European descended from people living under the domination of the Russians/Soviets and myself growing up in the West, I prefer having the US as the leader of NATO as they have a record of leaving you alone whilst part of their alliance whilst we have the Soviet example of how they threated their former Warsaw pact allies when those tried to reform. Even now Russia intervenes in other CSTO member states, eventhough this was with the invitation of the Kazakh government, this is not okay. I am glad I can protest against my government without the fear of US troops coming to kill me.
