@4FlatTires thanks ! I always try to be informed about a subject before commenting. Always try to have multiple sources from multiple different cultures/sides. Always check the background of said sources. In the case of this conflict. You should see the Russian people as having a collective trauma. The second world war or as they call it the great patriotic war, has traumatized them. The fact that so many Soviets died (14 million Russians and 8 million Ukrainian for example) and the damage the Germans caused has scarred the nation. That combined with ww1 and Napoleon, all invaders from the west, has created this paranoia and in some cases hate, for all Western. Russia is geographically extremely hard to defend, Russia is very vulnerable. So if you believe your neighbours to be after you, than yes the current situation is scary. You should compare Russia with someone with PTSD, the country essentially has flashbacks. Doesn't matter if what they believe is true or not, to them it is. This combined with the Russian mythical history that makes them believe that they are a special people that are destined for greatness, you can get these kind of things. I mean the British too still have difficulty coming to terms with their new, far diminished, role in the world.
