@tommy tomas this is pure fiction. The state you refer to is the Rus' Russia isn't Rus' it is a decendant from it, just like Belarus and Ukraine. The same way that Italy is a decendant from the Roman Empire. Ukrainians, then known as Ruthenians and Cossacks, enter history as a clearly distinct cultural group in the 17th century, in their own state, the Cossack Hetmenate or Zaporizhian Sich. At that time the Moscovites, modern day Russians, managed to united the principalities of what is now Russia. At that time it is already noted that Ruthenians (a term first used for all Rus' but at this time only for what are now Ukrainians) and Moscovites have different languages, traditions and dress (with Moscovites resembling their Tatar overlords in dress and hairstyles). The term Ukrainian in indeed a modern term, but it describes a people that has been a distinct cultural group for centuries and has just been given a different name. Your version of history is an imperialist myth litterally copied from Putin and full of amateur historian mistakes.

Unlike you I have actually studied medieval, early modern and modern sources of the region, both Russian and those from the powers around them. @AussieComrade Russia has the right of self determination and so does Ukraine. Russia has no right to decide Ukraine's choices. Ukraine perceives Russia as a threat (and it has been proven why), and so it is allowed to seek protection from that. It is that simpel. Not only large nations have the right to be protected or to make their own decisions )).

@justme ! bro what is the whataboutism xD. Russia and Brittain both did colonialism. The fact Russia's colonies directly borderd it, doesn't make it less of a horrible act. The results of Russian colonialism in for example central Asia and the caucasus are exactly the same as European colonialism (considering the Russians were considered part of the Western Imperialist colonial powers that makes sense). @Erem Stemero yes I agree. And mate, even if people's are exactly the same, it is about how they self identify. Ukrainians self identify as Ukrainians, so no matter anything else, they are Ukrainians. Whatever someone else says about it, they are separate. I myself also don't know any Ukrainian, including from my family (they come from Donetsk) as well as friends all over the country, who see Ukrainians and Russians as one people. I speak only Russian, sadly, but I am learning Ukrainian, also because a lot of my friends switched the language they use. I agree with you. There is nothing to negotiate. Stay safe mate and Слава Україні! P.s. I will never understand people that tell other people what they are instead of just accepting how someone self identifies. If an anything Ethiopian is raised in the Netherlands and self identifies as Dutch, he is Dutch for example. ))

@Maxus Lorenzo Crimea itself voted for Ukrainian independence in 1991 🤦. Also the natives of the region are pro Ukrainian. The pro Russian people are colonists. The right of self determination is not there so you can keep changing countries every 23 years. They chose to be part of Ukraine in 1991 and the international borders were recognized. They had their own autonomy. I actually think that if Crimea is retaken, the Autonomous Republic should be abolished and Crimea be turned into an oblast especially because of their actions against the Crimean Tatars.

@justme ! "the West" never attacked Russia. France did once and Germany did once. That is all. Never "the West".as there never was the concept of a united West until after ww2. Both times a large part of "the West" fought with Russia. Also Crimean War, First World War? Two wars Russia (co-) started and which involved Western powers and in which it got demolished. Stop repeating imperialist myths. It isn't history and you sound really dumb for saying them. There is nothing special about Russia, or any other country for that matter. About Russia staying in its neighbourhood, Outer Manchuria, was not its neighbourhood when the colonisation by Moscovy/Russia started. Also colonisation remains colonisation, doesn't matter if it is your neighbour or if it is far away. So that is a bit hypocrite. Or do you say that the Circassian genocide was okay? Because it happend in the neighbourhood instead of the other side of the world? For me personally they are both just as horrible and Russia's wealth has been built just as much on the back of colonial subjects as that of the West. Any student of history would tell you that. I personally can't understand people like you. People that are, rightfully, so anti-imperiliast and anti-colonial, two things that are honestly horrible and sadly still not destroyed (including France's actions in West Africa), only to defend another country doing it because it is on your side. You don't need an empire, you don't even need to be a great power. I rather live in a regional power but have a good live and a good standard of living than being a "great power" (only because it has nukes) as Russia and scoring lower than alot of "weaker" countries in terms of HDI, life expectancy etc. Why don't you guys start spending what you spend on war and killing, on developing your own country (the same I would say to an American btw)? I never will get how people can support an offensive war like you do.

Orcs love to blame Ukraine and Belarus for the territories taken from Poland/Romania eventhough it was Moscow which annexed the territories into these states, not the two countries themselves. About Wolyn, they love to bring that up, whilst the USSR itself is responsible for massacres in ww2. Against the same people no less (Katyn Forest), so it is a bit hypocrite of them yeah.

@terry hollands in international diplomacy only written agreements counts yeah. Not to mention the agreements, if even made, were with a state that ceased to exists. As Russia =/= the USSR, within the USSR it was simply the RSFSR. Gorbachev, may he rest in peace and now that outside of Russia we respect him for his actions to try and bring freedoms, was a bit naive to not have the agreements be written in a treaty )).

@justme ! Western Ukrainians don't hate the ethnic Russians in the country, not to mention Eastern Ukraine is overwhelmingly ethnic Ukrainian . Not to mention that a majority in said regions are pro Ukrainian about the other part.. well we live in the 21st century and we don't want this imperialist bs. The land is Ukrainian, it is that simple. If you want to exchange land for peace so much, give them your city )).

@Erem Stemero yeah fair enough. It is just frustrating for me as a historian who specialised in it to hear the bs they spread. It is like listening to 19th century Europeans talking about their Colonial Empires. Also yeah about the threat thing, I just recently told a Russian friend that nobody here ever thought about Russia before they started invading people. As nobody here would want to conquer them or anything. For a while we even thought we could be friends, against the advise of Eastern Europeans. As someone who is half Ukrainian, their imperiliast bs is just offensive. But yeah they live in a alternative reality where it is okay to deny the existence of an civilization that was first seen as seperate 400 years ago and that they as Moskals created it

😂😂 I am personally very glad my country has never been under Russian controll and we don't have a significant Russian minority. They are like a fifth column. Also because many don't integrate (the older generation) and only watch Russian state TV etc.
