  1.  @1112viggo  technically no the Netherlands =/= Holland. The Netherlands is the country and Holland is a historical region in the country that's divided in the provinces of North and South Holland. However due to the importance of Holland in the country (3 of the 4 big cities are located here, as well as a large part of the economy) many foreign countries use the term for the whole country (and quite some Dutchmen too). It's like how the UK is often called England outside of the UK. About Dutch. Well it is because in the past the Dutch called there language Dietsch (Diets) which was used as well as the term Duits for the language (nowadays meaning German/Deutsch but back then it didn't as we can also see in the Dutch anthem from around the same time). Diets actually means the same as Deutsch namely language of the people.
