However, it was a phycological triumph because the US military had assured President Johnson that victory was in sight and Johnson relayed that lie to the American people. When this enemy, that was supposedly close to defeat, waged a massive assult that hit nearly every provincial capital in S Vietnam and seized the US embassy in Saigon and captured the city of Hue; the American people began to turn against the war in greater numbers. A few weeks later President Johnson announced he would not seek re-election . Before Tet, the war seemed winnable to the American people. After Tet, it was a lost cause.

  4.  @tenzinnordron9836  It was a military defeat because the Viet Cong lost tens of thousands of fighters as well as all the territory they seized. It was a strategic defeat because the whole idea of the offensive was to spark a general uprising of the people in S Vietnam against the Government, which did not happen. The psychological body blow it delt to America would have been a strategic victory if it was intended. However, the "mastermind" behind the Tet Offensive (Le Duan) Really believed it would end the war. The only reason it resulted in a psycological victory for the Viet Cong was that the incometance of the US military command turned out to be greater than the hubris of Le Duan. I agree that it was a strategic victory in that the US command had been comletely tricked into thinking that the attack was going to happen at a remote oupost such as Khe Sahn causing many US troops to be deployed in the wrong place. The VC did have the element of surprise but they simply lacked the firepower to prevail without the help of the general uprising that never materialized.
