Honestly though it's not really our job to, if you want to bullshit someone you're giving a tour to then don't bring into the conversation people who spend all day every day discussing and considering minutiae and all the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. If you have a good and happy team, then let them talk and hopefully they won't reveal any of the skeletons in the closet because they'll be too busy showing off the program or their fancy test setup.

Yes, please let them hang out together at home and leave the rest of us alone

I remember as a kid having to learn how to entertain myself. We didn't have a tv or electronic devices save for a computer downstairs we weren't allowed to use much, and if we ever complained we were bored our mother would say something like "Oh you're bored? Fantastic, come unload and reload the dishwasher!" I wasn't the smartest kid but eventually even I learned to stop complaining :D

In software development that something is usually the fact that they singlehandedly wrote a critical tool that no one else understands (often in part because the code is terrible) and is essentially or completely undocumented.

Honestly depending on your line of work could be perfectly credible. I have the memory of a lobotomised mosquito so I pretty regularly have to check the documentation for the same info over and over again.

Never been in a relationship, and yup some of these videos have highlighted some probable contributing factors. Funny how some random dude with acting skills can help reveal the answer to that classic question people get asked, "how are you still single?" haha

I was wondering...
14
I feel like several of them will be telling the next guy about how they were stuck in abusive relationships
14
nah, he seemed kinda disappointed when she left the room so I think the plan was to ask her but it got thrown off course.

Pretty sure I've never worked for a company that wasn't involved in "top-tier tech solutions".

@muffin7320 Why would an AI told to maximise profits have more morality?

To be fair there aren't really that many full skeletons on display, mostly dismembered body parts like arms, hair, skin... I do wonder what his take on tombs prominently featuring a skull and crossbones would be though.

Programmers and engineers generally try to be as precise and factual as possible, if you'd like to convince someone to sign on you should instead have them talk to a technical salesman. There's a reason in tech it's common to have a business unit distinct from the dev team; devs implement the functionality of the program, the business unit make all the decisions regarding things like what usernames should be valid, what to do if a user is unable to complete an order etc. Devs aren't responsible for arbitrary decisions made because some higher-up hates UI that includes checkboxes, nor are they responsible for anything informed by corporate strategy.

@jjrang1 I used to work with someone who told me about a former colleague of his who would take every Friday off. The guy didn't like taking a week of vacation at a time or anything, so he basically just used it to shorten his work week.
6
The worst is realising that you yourself do some of these things and wondering how many people secretly hate you. Room to grow for sure, but also plenty of regret to arise
6
@nirorit If your company is anything like mine, I'll bet you get a ton of bogus emails as well, like "so-and-so replied to your comment on their PR".
5
Reading some of these comments I'm so glad I live in a country with mandatory vacation and union contracts as standard.

@trippingandbrowsing1269 Especially for people who don't have much dating success it's a really easy hole to fall down. I think it helps to have female friends and people you can talk it all over with, but otherwise it's tough. I think it's sort of a defense mechanism, a way to rationalise a personal tragedy that could be caused by any combination of factors internal and external.

@cherryhazard8002 I wouldn't mind having a "trad" arrangement if a) I got paid enough and b) if I were 100% sure she weren't with me for the money. This second point is key, and it's why I'm very wary of women who don't have a job of some variety. That said, I would also be very happy if she worked too once we were together.
5
@SreenikethanI I guess it makes sense, he's probably of the opinion that those privates must be investigated
5
What did you tell him?
4
@Ludovicus1769 To be honest I don't care how the economy is doing, I care about how quality of life is doing especially for the poorest and worst-off in our society. Unions certainly have value in that they help workers not get screwed over by their workplaces.
4
@edwina336 Why would men naturally be more likeable to the higher-ups than women?...
4
@Agudname it's easy to get it mixed up with air freshener

For me it's the personality hire. So incredibly painful to watch and I want to stop, yet can't look away.

@psychopompous3207 Dude, I work union as do many people in my country. That doesn't mean I don't work, it doesn't mean management can't fire me, it basically just means that I have a standard contract with the same rules as lots and lots of other people and if things go to shit I can contact a union representative to have a little legal power.

@EltoltDzson006 Your last paragraph isn't entirely correct and it does vary a lot depending on where you live. While it is true a church near me has "mary's house" (built of brick, recovered during a crusade according to the plaque) there are also churches with a lot of relics in little gold-painted frames or whatever just stuck in a glass display case in the sacristy where basically no one sees them or particularly cares. It's sort of the "old garage" problem. Heck, there's also at least one well-documented case I'm aware of regarding a dude being stuck in a sacristy for a hundred years or so after he died simply because he was in something of a bureaucratic pickle and they didn't know what to do with him.

@witchykittyy tbh based on experience you probably could have ended that sentence four words earlier, but basically I make a very decent amount for my city but not enough for wife + kids without a significant decrease in expenses. That explanation might make sense or maybe I have no f-ing clue what I'm talking about, maybe when I'm 50 I'll be able to say which one it is.
2
@theslappablejerk It would at least be a good way to find out which of your friends and family were actually listening...though maybe sometimes it's better not to know lol

@NyanMango Also bizzarre since the advent of the mouse has made typing much less common and continuous than it once was. Especially considering that the job of computer programmer exists, and basically all of us have IDEs with tab completion.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if the car insurance would actually have any effect in this scenario? It seems weird that an auto insurance company would pay out for something you did whilst merely in the proximity of your vehicle.
1
@Mujtabaa_M Not necessarily. I used to live in a small town, if you weren't on speaking terms with someone it just sucked and it was like half the town was cut off to/from you. Maybe the subgroups of boomers who have spent large parts of their lives in the same place are just tight-knit enough that it's pretty natural to stay friends/reunite as friends after the fact.

@whatevername4873 Maybe he wasn't a native speaker or something?
1
This is my mother making plans, it's honestly such a pain to deal with because she'll expect you to be ready at 16.00 sharp (or whatever) despite not having mentioned an actual time or place
1
nahhh, it's a bad point of contact but the fact the guy is still around probably indicates a lack of bosses breathing down everyone's necks so it might be decently managed. I hope they choose someone else to be POC soon though.
1
@dabd8175 presumably a man who was looking for some combination of good acting and indications of what not to do so he can make sure he's at least not too far off the right track.
1
@DarkF4lcon Ah yes, with the infinite money we all have hahaha

@jacksoncremean1664 Oh god...software developer here, a few weeks ago a colleague of mine didn't know how to do a git merge in the command line. I told him to type "git merge --help", which he did after some convincing. Since this was on Windows, the result was a man page opened in his browser detailing exactly how to use the tool. He looked at the title, scrolled to the end, scrolled back up, and opened a new tab only to type in "how to do git merge on the command line". Wtf.
1
@jacksoncremean1664 I think it was less that and more he was getting fixated on why the built-in ide tool wasn't working. Sadly I didn't have time or honestly the knowledge to help him there, all I could do is help him get that user story done.

@Falariel455 Being fairly junior, I'm very wary of startups when looking for a job (having briefly worked for a bad one in the past). Startups that try to succeed via hiring the cheapest devs they can find are likely not to do so well as they tend not to have a lot of resources for onboarding and stuff and when fighting against time as the money is running out they'd be better off with a preexisting team of experienced people who work well together and have a good idea of exactly what they're trying to build as well as mutual trust and a willingness to be underpaid for a while.

@PsychoticAnarchist69 It really goes in waves...unfortunately companies still aren't very good at figuring out how to find good developers so even at its best you end up with he first contact consisting of recruiters asking you if you know a long string of technologies and checking them off on a list, oblivious to which technologies might be similar to other things you know or the fact that it's literally our job to figure out things we don't know. I'm in Italy, but for example here I had no trouble finding a second job after very little experience two years ago, but now I've spent several months off-and-on searching for a new place and only now am I almost hired. Three interviews down, one to go (which is likely mostly a formality). Sure, I'm being pickier this time and am no longer in the entry-level market, but it's still been more challenging than I'd hoped. A year ago I also tried finding a new job, but sort of gave up after a while because I didn't see anything inspiring (and also we had some new colleagues join my team whom I really liked). But again, tech hiring seems to be dictated by trends; when FAANG is hiring, so does everyone else. Then they realise half the people they hired kinda suck and also they don't actually have that much work to do so the layoffs start.
