  2. Depending on the testing it might be way worse than just an hour break mid-test. I've had situations where I had 10-20 minutes of configuration and then had to start the tests over every time my IP address changed, and my IP address would be randomly assigned every time I signed into the VPN, and the VPN connection would fall whenever I lost internet access. Combine this with using my phone hotspot as my main internet connection, and a forced lunch break would add probably an hour or more to the test duration.

  4. why tf would they set the clocks in the building ahead? Sure it lets you bully your employees into starting their shift early, but then they'll clock off early too so it fucks with everything for no reason

  8.  @gytosas  You would think, but a lot of famous brands seem to be largely running on momentum. They cheap out where they can just like everyone else, sometimes more (they can get better contracts with suppliers because of their name).

Fairly new to the workforce, but my understanding is recruitment is the process between someone who knows nothing about your role calls you up to try to sell you on some job, and eventually getting through the interviews with the future bosses etc up til the point of signing the contract. After you start the job is the onboarding phase, which just means training. Could be anything from someone actually explaining how to do your job to being stuck in a room with twenty hours of video to watch on every product your new company has ever sold. But basically once you're onboarding you already work there. That is, that's how it works in my country but they seem to have some really weird setups over there lol

  10. ​ @reginabillotti  I'm a programmer and hate when they start interviews that way...there are so many tech companies competing for the 2024 "dumbest name of the year" award and I just apply to the positions that look vaguely interesting and not terrible, do you really expect me to know your name off the top of my head? Half the time when I get a callback after applying I don't remember the ad at all...

It's perhaps telling that I (gen Z) have grown up with the idea that "where do you see yourself in x years" is a normal interview question, but I'm now on my third job and only one interviewer I've had has asked me something to that effect. On the other hand, it seems to be pretty universal for recruiters to ask how much I currently make.

  21.  @Robert-cu9bm  True, but in many places that's just as effective as saving up. In my country the cities with vaguely affordable housing tend to be in the south, a large portion of which is predicted to become a desert in the next two decades.

  23.  @Robert-cu9bm  I do better myself, i take care of my mental health by not busting my butt for unrealistic deadlines that will benefit me not at all if they are made. I also do a good deal to increase my skillset, but I very deliberately avoid increasing my skillset during my own time in such a way that it will benefit my company. Training should be paid. I'm a C# dev by trade, so I work 8.30 - 17.30 (one-hour lunch break) on that, then I pack up and after doing whatever else I need to do that day I will often open up my current side project and work on that. On weekends I will happily spend eight or nine hours a day on these hobby projects (atm I'm playing around with Haskell) which one could say is me broadening my horizons and bettering myself (again, assuming I don't have too many chores etc to do). The only thing is sometimes I forget to eat. Don't assume that just because someone doesn't care about a company they have a contract with it means they don't care about themselves. I'm happy to better myself, I'm not happy to give someone free work.

  24. What sorts of things do you have to teach people? I'm a software dev without a college education and mostly what I've observed is the people out of college have some knowledge of design patterns and potentially some low-level knowledge (though from what I've heard it's dubious if they remember due to how it's taught) but don't really have a lot of experience with things like reading complex code to figure out how it's failing in that really weird way. In my industry I'd rate it as optional, though learning to code in some technology being used is pretty much mandatory.

  25. ​ @Fabian46544  Ah yes, I'm a dev and it's pretty much every interview when they ask about how much experience I have with the exact Java frameworks they use. I mean dude, I've used C#, Java, C, Haskell, Python, Javascript, Typescript, fking Powershell (don't ask), Lua, Nix (the language and the system) and probably a few others with any number of different frameworks or libraries as each project required. I'm perfectly capable of ye old RTFM procedure. The much harder part will be understanding the over- yet somehow also under-engineered backasswards system that your team has cooked up over the last eight years with no documentation to speak of.

  28.  @gytosas  Same, but I'd need to be emotionally invested. Trouble is, startups tend to do best when put together by individuals with a ton of experience rather than 4 dudes in their 20s googling how basic stuff works.
