  1. It's good advice. Although it took me 5 years since I started to learn programming until I figured out what I wanted to do, and even then I wasn't sure. The thing is I started to learn programming in my first year of high-school, as I was at an IT intensive high-school. 4 years later I went to university, and one year later I got my first job in web development and I continued my professional career on that path. Of course, non of this was self-taught, but it was part of a highly structured educational system. Unfortunately, I never actually figured out what I really wanted to do with my skills, so I just continued improving on the web-development path.
