  1. That's interesting. I wonder how that tax money is spent on in Germany. I lived in Denmark as a migrant for many years and was also taxed around 50%, but I felt that that money was well spent on providing quality social systems & welfare programs - e.g. fully state funded education system (i.e. no tuition fees required), universal healthcare system, prison systems, unemployment funds, worker re-skilling programs, investments for entrepreneurs, and more. I left Denmark for unrelated reasons, and now I'm in the UK, and while yes there's more opportunity to earn more here, I severely dislike the overall support for citizens that the British state offers. For example, I'd be happy to pay more in tax if that meant reducing education fees.

  2.  @sierraecho884  Interesting, I didn't know Germany had such an ageing population. I can see how that's a problem. Yeah, a rapid influx of millions of refugees can stress out the welfare system. Ideally things should reach a new normal as they are integrated into the tax paying worforce, but obviously I don't know much about how Germany is handling that. Anyway, it sounds like a difficult situation. Thanks for explaining. And good luck!

In that case, it sounds like the welfare system needs to be redesigned to cope with the change in circumstances, maybe have new checks and requirements put into it - e.g. a new time limit for unemployment funds, new strings attached to it (like requiring going through a training program, or work placement program). You also don't want to just remove the welfare system, because that could also plunge a big chunk of the population into poverty and a portion of those into crime. It sounds like a difficult problem.

  5. I disagree. Equality is a desired outcome, and social programs are necessary to support citizens' well-being. People in Denmark for example, a country with high taxes and impressive social welfare programs, are consistently ranked among the happiest in the world according to multiple international indexes.

  6. Could you elaborate on that? I'm not from Denmark but I've lived in Denmark for over 5 years, and a few other countries before and after that, and I must say that so far I believe the Danish Nordic model is the best I've seen so far when it comes to citizens' well-being.

  7. At the end of the day, the USA is also broken down in individual states, which in turn are also broken down into small administrative areas.
