  5. Because during the Cold War, every country grabbed a powerful sponsor, either the US or the USSR. India being the disorganized mess they've tended to be, chose wrong. Which left Paskistan with the US.

  6.  @jeremywheeler2122  During the cold war, the opposition between the US and the USSR was sufficiently intense so that nearly every country could get a sponsor from one side or the other. Certainly, a nation the size of India received lots of attention, and could choose a side. Some countries played the US and the USSR off each other, in order to get the best deal. Not India, although I can't quite tell you what they were thinking at the time. Or if they were thinking at all.
