The mainstream pundits are going on about percentages and swings. If you only look at those, the prospects for a Labour landslide look really good. We're getting told about record swings in the Blackpool by-election as well as in the council and mayoral elections. What's not being mentioned is the fact that those swings are entirely due to the fall in Tory support being even greater than the fall in Labour support. That's why Starmer is suddenly trying to look progressive and radical: denying his previous support for Israeli genocidal actions, promising to nationalise the railways etc. Labour's private polling and analysis will be giving him very serious cause for concern. These local elections are very similar to what occurred in 1991 just before Kinnock's shock defeat at the hands of John Major in 1992. As now, the very impressive swings against the Tories in council elections hid the fact that the Labour vote had not improved at all. The difference, of course, is Reform UK. In 1992, Tory abstainers dutifully returned to the fold in the general election. That may not occur on this occasion. If so, that will save Starmer's bacon. Nonetheless, he won't be getting the landslide everyone is predicting.
