John Maynard Keynes: "Anything we can actually do, we can afford." I'm not a Keynesian by any means but he did at least understand the relationship between money and economics. The economic ministers of Atlee's (and Truman's, De Gaulle's, Adenauer's, etc, etc ) government followed his advice and gave us the most prosperous 3 decades in human history. The cheese-paring zero-sum nonsense that has prevailed since Thatcher (including under Blair and Brown) is pure economic illiteracy; nothing more than glorified book-keeping. Far from being an extravagance, the £28 billion was short by a factor of about 10. A green investment programme could create hundreds of thousands of skilled and well paying jobs - with a knock-on benefit of a skilled workforce available for other businesses and thus both a decrease in unemployment and an increase of spending into the economy. JMK would approve. Improved housing stock and decreased pollution and poverty would also have a knock on effect on health and education. It would be a wise investment, not an extravagant indulgence. The only people losing out would be those who make a killing from poverty, ignorance and poor health - or donors, as Keir Starmer would call them.
