Since the end of World War II, there has been a disturbing undercurrent amongst Germany's liberals which sees uncritical support for Israel as being Germany's penance for the Holocaust. They accept the crimes their country committed and they want to atone for it but it seems to me (and I have personally confronted a number of them for this) that they assuage their guilt by supporting Zionists in committing their own crimes against humanity. It's bizarre and very very sad.
