  1. Ukraine is the same playbook as Afghanistan: Push USSR/Russia until its only option is to fight back, then provide its enemy with just enough support to keep the war going but not to win. The idea is to create a slow-bleeding wound which would debilitate but not completely destroy. The ultimate aim is to make Putin weak enough to be overthrown by his own allies in Moscow. It worked in bringing down the SU. That was a bit of a problem at first because it resulted in a drunken clown taking over but ultimately he was replaced by the sort of guy the West wanted: er...Putin. He was corrupt, nasty and utterly ruthless. That's how the US likes its pet dictators. They liked him at first. There are plenty of pictures of him glad-handing and back-slapping the US's western surrogates like Sarkozy, Berlusconi and Blair. But then he started going his own way. It ended up with the formation of the BRICS alliance which is a long term threat to US interests. That's why they're destroying him now. But who do they think is going to replace him? If the Russians decide they don't want him because he isn't "strong" enough, surely the most likely successor is going to be "stronger". That is to say, they'll bring more repression and be more willing to risk everything to defeat this surrogate NATO incursion. It could be time to whitewash the windows (see When the Wind Blows) folks.
