I love Oz. I have two sisters living there and many friends. But the arrival of Australian beef means that we've reached bottom. We're colluding in awful animal cruelty and environmental damage, risking public health and ruining our own farmers.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Rob. He must have been very proud of the work you do.

Problem is that you have a product which is presented in a positive light on a daily basis without allowing anyone to give a counter view it's going to be popular. That's why the monarchy is unassailable. It's also worth remembering that it gives them incredible wealth and privilege and they'll fight like hell to keep it. So as long as that's borne in mind, let's get to abolishing them!

Starmer isn't going to bring the Tory nightmare to an end. He's going to do the same as Blair who has recently admitted that he set out to consolidate Thatcher's changes rather than reverse them. There'll be some tinkering at the edges but at the end of his first term we'll still be living under neoliberal economics, still be allowing banks, oil companies and anyone else willing to donate being given a pass to price gouge, pollute and despoil, attacks on our civil liberties and rights will not have been reversed. Most importantly, because he knows it will enable the Greens and possible Left splinters from his own party, we will still have First Past The Post and the Royal Prerogative and Scotland will continue to be denied its right to decide its own future. My view. Not just a Red Tory. Worse. His aim is to destroy Labour as a progressive movement and ensure that it is an enabler of the excesses of capitalism rather than a brake on them.

@paulashley1232 Australian animal welfare and environmental standards are woeful next to European standards. That's how they're able to produce so much more cheaply.

It's gratifying to see the entitled sudden suddenly realising that they're not. It's sad that they have to get away with so much damage before they are eventually stopped, though.

Indeed. But the most important reason for it being a company is to make sure that Farage stays in control. They'll have show conferences with brainless reactionaries applauding like trained sea lions for the TV cameras but this is institutional Fascism and probably a pilot for the real thing.

The US Democrats just achieved the impossible feat of getting Donald Trump re-elected. They did it by promoting the interests of big business and bankers over those of the working class and alienating progressives a large ethnic/religious bloc by supporting a genocide in Palestine. The result was large groups staying at home and some natural supporters actually voting for Trump. The Labour Party seems desperate to emulate them by doing exactly the same things. and I think the bookmakers will soon be giving good odds on a Tory/Reform coalition. The sad thing is that a big chunk of the current Parliamentary Labour Party would prefer that to a genuinely progressive Labour government.

A plane crash, a car crash, a crazed loon with a sword at some colonial shindig. Take your pick from a whole smorgas board of mishaps or miscreance. If Charles had died for any reason before the birth of William and Harry, we would now have a head of state who had a close friendship with a child sex trafficker and no end of dodgy business dealings with some of the worst confidence tricksters on the globe. If that's not a good argument for a republic....

My guess is that Starmer will follow the Blairite tradition of caving in to whatever the US demands and will mangle the English language to label anyone who opposes that as Antisemitic or Pro-Putin. But it would make no sense whatsoever. Europe is on our doorstep and our trade with it massively exceeds that with the US. Moreover, by the time Trump's maniacal economic policies have taken effect, the US will be a lot poorer and trade with it will be of decreasing value.
