@matthewshutt8108 When you take into account the poor take-up rate of means-tested benefits, the administrative cost of means-testing and the costs of people suffering from poor health as a result of turning off the heating or reducing food intake, it makes perfect sense. The net amount saved by means-testing is piffling and the potential damage is enormous.

@physiocrat7143 It has several variants. The most obvious one is the "school" established in 1947 in Mont Pelerin in Switzerland. It luminaries have included Von Mises, Von Hayek, Friedman, James M Buchanan and most laughably, Charles Koch. The flaw in their arguments is that they have been tried, often at gunpoint, and failed miserably. The only reason this pathetic group endures is because it prescribes remedies which rich people like so it is well funded.
