  2. I think it's more that they don't LIKE what a pension is. The idea of each succeeding generation funding those who have retired on the understanding that the next generation will fund them is WAY too collectivist for them.

  6. The financial markets are controlled by people who can move their money around with a couple of clicks of the mouse. They can safely invest in things which have short-term value because they can easily get out in time when a collapse looks likely. As things stand, these are the people who have power over our pension funds and they run them for themselves, not for us. That's why there used to be fairly effective regulation which limited what sort of funds we could invest our pensions in and this kept them safe from unscrupulous or incompetent fund managers. ( A good example of the "Nanny State", if ever there was one) Thatcher's de-regulation and other piecemeal tinkering since then removed such safeguards. People were encouraged to take their money out of safe final salary pensions and into dodgy get-rich-quick schemes which promised better outcomes. In fact, they have generally resulted in pitifully small outcomes and a lot of people are suffering hardship now as a result. We need to go back to proper regulation with the state pension being a bigger part of our retirement income.
