You have described the educational paradox of neoliberalism: It claims to promote merit but also to prevent those perceived to be the meritocracy from being challenged. Timely too. The dark forces behind Donald Trump have an identical agenda and we can expect plenty of (figurative and literal) book burnings, defenestrations of prominent academic progressives and closure of progressive institutions there over the next 4 years. And that's what we'll get here in the unlikely event of Badenoch ever achieving power. That's assuming that Starmer hasn't already beaten her to it, of course.
