It's a no brainer. Investing in HMRC staff will bring in more revenue. So why won't government do it?

@zetectic7968 You're absolutely right. I've worked in the IR twice. First of all in the 1970s when I left school. To be trained as an ordinary public facing Tax Officer took 12 months and you had to sit an exam at the end of it. I returned in 2003 to the same grade where training was done in weeks with no exam. It has been trimmed much further since then. The pay-off for the government is that they can announce a lower headcount. But as the average tax-take for each one of those heads is many times the salary it's paid, it makes no sense whatsoever. If little Miss Accounts-At-The-Kitchen-Table is serious about fiscal responsibility, she'll announce a massive increase in HMRC recruitment, along with a serious enhancement of their training. Dinnae hud yer breath!

@billB101 He bowed to the right-wing media over the supposed NEED to do it. To be fair. It's probably not fear. It's more a matter of him agreeing with their heartless and economically illiterate viewpoint.

@billB101 Er yes. It's objective fact. He has continuously followed the path dictated by the right-wing media. Assuming that this so-called "black hole" had to be filled (it didn't) , he could have done it with taxes directed at the rich.

Agreed. When I worked for a firm of tax accountants, I once accompanied an accountant to a Commissioner's meeting. She (herself an ex Inspector of Taxes) ran rings around them and proudly boasted later that they had missed several flaws in her arguments. Her salary was 3 times that of both the Inspectors of Taxes put together and, while she had a full week to prepare for that 30 minute hearing, the Inspectors would have had the same amount of time to prepare for all the hearings they had that week. Needless to say, the amount saved by the client (and therefore lost to the rest of us) was eye watering.
