Good sentiments but I think the concepts of left and right are still useful for establishing a broad understanding of where parties stand. But right now, where we are in our political progress, the important division is between more and less democracy. It is having the tools to make our own decisions about which way we should go. So the litmus tests are about positions on proportional representation and on the devolving of political power to local communities. Personally, because I am in Scotland, I see the path to that leading through Independence but I'd like to see it down south too.
