Absolutely spot on, Richard. It's leaving everything to the market that causes the problems. The market decides where the jobs will be, which dictates where people will have to live, which dictates where houses will be built. And at every stage, the people making the profits are able to externalise their costs with impunity. Better regulation and management of house building and communal property management will help a great deal, of course and in the short to medium term, your idea of taking more housing into public ownership is a sound one. But in the long term, we've got to start planning our economy so that people can live safely, comfortably and sustainably without foreseeable consequences and costs that get shunted onto others.
