@glynnwright1699 It was different for me. I was doing my schoolwork by candlelight because the government wanted to begin reversing the very working-class advances that allowed people like me to be doing that schoolwork in the first place.

@glynnwright1699 No. I'm talking about the 1944 Education Act. I might add that had it not been for the NHS, I wouldn't have been there at all. I despair that my great grandchildren may not have such "privilege".

The very fact that you've found so many pertinent questions indicates that Starmer (nor any of the others obsessed with growth) has no idea what he is trying to achieve. The problem is that, since Thatcher, we have adopted a ruinous narrative which says that public sector services are a luxury paid for by private sector profits. Consequently, government has laboured away at reducing the "burden" of the public sector in the false expectation that this will allow the private sector to thrive. This will, in turn, provide the funds for improving public services. It's the same logic which justifies going to war for the purpose of establishing peace - and it will have the same level of success!
