There has always been pedantry about the use of the word "Fascism". You can call someone a "Maoist" because they had once belonged to an organisation which received funding from China. You can call someone a "Trotskyite" because they read the Socialist Worker. You can be called a "Stalinist" because you occasionally get articles published in the Morning Star. But, for some reason or other, the word Fascist can only be used if the individual exactly meets very tight criteria laid down by certain academics. Why is that? Donald Trump advocates policies which would not have been out of place in Mussolini's Italy or Hitler's Germany. He speaks with admiration of world leaders who operate dictatorships and Ivana Trump informed us that a collection of Hitler's speeches was the only book she ever saw him reading. He speaks alarmingly about using violence against opponents and shutting down news outlets that criticise him. Most importantly, he views democracy and the rule of law as weaknesses which need to be eliminated. Oh, and it's worth pointing out that most Fascists in history were as corrupt as he is. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks....
