  1. This is an excellent account of the 1950s and onward counter revolution of the rich against the New Deal and the new found confidence of labour to demand its share of the wealth it was creating. But it is inaccurate in suggesting that it started in the post war period. The very constitution of your country is based on the wealthy's fear and distaste for democracy. The founding fathers feared that if universal suffrage was applied, the poor would simply elect representatives who would legally dispossess the rich of their hard earned wealth and distribute it amongst the great unwashed and society would collapse in an orgy of drunkeness and feckless idleness. That's why you have the "checks and balances" which prevent the population from getting universal health care, food safety and the levels of social security we enjoy in Europe. But you are right in pointing out that the rich have increased their level of mobilisation against democracy over the last 50 years or so. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to suggest that the US is sliding towards Fascism. Well done to Thom Hartmann and others for calling it out.
