It may be a low percentage that actually falls into what is officially called poverty but there are many many more who will suffer real hardship. It's an absolute disgrace.

It is not a question of either or. There should be NO poverty in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Period.

@Popsickle34 Indeed. But many more who do. It doesn't include me this year because, at 68, I'm still working. Next year I will be just outside the pension credit limit and it will mean eating less or turning off the heating. The matter-of-fact callousness of people like you scares me more than the Tories.

@Popsickle34 If you want to make sure that everyone who needs a benefit gets it, you make it universal. That's been a principle of social policy since Beveridge. And it's also well known that means testing nearly always results in people who ARE entitled not receiving it. Many hundreds of thousands of people will suffer because of this spiteful and badly thought-out measure. Some will die. And by the time the extra burden on A & E and social care is covered, there will be very little money saved. It's nothing but a political measure made with the intention of making this Tory reserve team look like it's able to to make "tough" decisions.

@Zaphod-ef9yz What a vile, nasty and profoundly ignorant comment. For people on the basic pension plus a modest works pension, this will mean a choice between switching on the heating or eating.
