  2.  @peterhsieh380  It was NOT Mao that initiated modernization but rather Premier Zhou En Lai. In 1963 Zhou was the first to propose the '4 Modernizations', while Mao was dealing with the failure of the great leap forward. Luckily for China (and the world's consumers) after both Zhou's and Mao's deaths, Deng was able to bring to fruition the visions of his mentor - Zhou.

  4.  @peterhsieh380  Your post ONLY mentioned Mao & the CPC, then you immediately segued to modernization. If you think most westerners knew it was Zhou whom initiated modernization, then you do NOT know the west.
