  2. For most Americans, the r at the end of the word is an r coloured vowel. While the alveolar approximate is used in other areas, if you were to do this at the end, you'd sound like a pirate. In fact, on bad acting by British actors trying to do an American accent, this can be hearrrd.

  4. The alveolar approximate or retroflex r is rare outside English. Most r's are tapped, trilled, or guttural.

  9. When the Germans had their vowel shift, they politely changed the spelling to match. When the Dutch and Danish did their vowel shift, they said "screw it, we'll do the french thing- leave the spelling for posterity." When the English did their vowel shift, they changed a few (hus -> house), but gave up and never really settled on pronunciations for each letter. The Irish got piss drunk and said "lets just put all the vowels in every single word...but only the true Irishman knows which vowel is the right one to say.
