Well, technically it is called Scotland. Apparently the county is wanting an independence referendum from missouri. Forget states rights, how about county's rights? 😋

A federation would be a good compromise and may benefit both. If the brexit vote had been done under federalism, then a double majority would have been required (eg majority vote at-large, and majority of the states).

Honestly, with the modern peaceful and negotiable society, city-states and counties can be sovereign states, being members of international organizations of their choosing (cultural - commonwealth, defence - NATO, trade - WTO, etc), or make their own (eg Scotland organization to replace a Scotland nation-state that scottish counties could join for culture reasons).

Free? I'll take it! 🤑🤑🤑

Curious if Scotland would allow referendum in Dumfries & Galloway County on Dumgallexit (ok, these portmanteaus are getting ridiculous) from Scotland. Just like Scotland, they were once independent, just further back in time. But 1707 is a long time too so... And I'm all for independence referendums, I'm just against the "I can but you can't" attitude and unfairness.

Isnt thst old guy scottish? Sorry, not british...

Reverse west Lothian question... * England, unlike the other states, doesn't have its own parliament. As such, the british parliament votes on the English state issues. The problem is that welsh and scots can vote on English-only issues too.

@michel-paulconsella8700 I believe the English votes for English laws is more a precedent and courtesy, not a law. And, if this were fine, why not abolish the scottish and welsh parliaments and just have scottish votes for scottish laws and welsh votes for welsh laws in the british parliament?
1
@michel-paulconsella8700 So why are you upset when I'm merely pointing out that the English dont have the same rights to their own parliament as the scots and welsh? Give all states (England, Scotland, Wales, north ireland) their own parliaments or no one gets them. South Australia wouldn't stand not having its own state parliament while every other state could. Fairness, mate.

@Ena Wow. Some of these separatists are as bad as trump supporters. Still no comment on my fairness of one state not having a parliament?

Federation anyone? Independence or unitary central control are not the only options.

@Ena According to international law, the UK is a sovereign state just like the US. One is a unitary state with home rule, the other is a federation. Scotland and New York are both component states of their respective sovereign country. Yes, Scotland can be considered a nation, but not a nation-state (eg country). A nation is a cultural or ethnic group within a location. A nation-state is a recognised independent country with a predominant national culture. Catalonia is a nation as much as Scotland--neither are independent.

@Joe Marley Those countries are independent--theyre just members of an international organization called the commonwealth. ASEAN and WTO aren't countries either, they're international organisations. I think the analogy would be better with canada being the UK and quebec being Scotland. And quebec had an independence referendum too, iirc.

United Ireland will happen as soon as Israel and Palestine becomes the united Israstine Federation. Irish are not monolithic. Religious, cultural, historical, and other differences.
