The new zealand system is best around, IMHO. MMP - 70(?) single member districts and a single nationwide district for 40(?) members, plus 10(?) native kiwi seats. Wish the single member districts were ranked choice rather than plurality (FPTP) though. Imagine if the US, Canada, or Australia reserved so many seats for natives. I'd love to see reserved seats for youth representatives, minority representatives, disabled representatives, and LGBTQI+ representatives. Let the govt have to appeal to everyone.

@neoarmour MMP is needed. I prefer having 20+ smaller parties that can have only one or two platform issues, being more akin to interest groups in parliament (eg NRA - gun rights, ACLU - free speech and religion, ASPCA - animal rights, Family - traditional family values, etc). Imagine trying to form a govt.

In 1964, a supreme court case (reynold v sims) effectively ruled the senate unconstitutional. The majority opinion stated that states should represent people and not trees, even in their upper house (state senates). Previously, some states had state senates that mirrored the federal US senate where there were 2 senators per county. By extension, however, the supreme court ruled the us senate unconstitutional as well as it represents trees and not people (every state gets 2, regardless of population).

Districts should be counties. Let the representative double as county leader. If redistricting is needed by the constitution, then the county lines would have to be adjusted, but still maintain its similar shape (usually squares). As everyone would know the county line changing, more voters could voice their annoyance at this rather than not being aware of the hundreds of invisible districts that exist (eg school, utility, parks, wastewater [not joking], etc).
