The nation states (e.g. US, China), continent states (eg EU), and cultural or defence orgs (e.g. Commonwealth of Nations, NATO) can be voluntary associations of culture, free trade, and collective history. New Orleans could take matters in its own hands in global warming and city flooding; Vancouver, Ottawa, London, Edinburgh, Beijing, Lincoln (Nebraska), etc. Be interesting to see if city-states re-emerge.

  6. I wonder if the state capitalism and/or oligopolies were the root cause of such a growth. Japan日本 and korea한국 (one a parliamentary democracy with a figurehead monarch, and the other pre-1988 a quasi-military dictatorship) both had oligopolies of keiretsu系列/chaebol재벌 (special conglomerates; e.g. mitsubishi三菱, hyundai현대) with govt funding. They also rebuilt and modernized fast. China中国, a communist dictatorship used state capitalism in the 80s to today to build its economy. Does it not matter the type of govt, but rather matters the govt investment and existence of oligopolies?
