The word "war" comes from old english "werre" from anglo norman french "guerre" but that word comes from the germanic word "werra" which you can still find in modern german in words like "Wehr" (defence). Lots of french words are of german origine since the franks ruled over france after the collapse of the roman empire. They did the same to french as french did later to old english.
