@SJRS700 "15 Minute cities" or as well call them in europe 'small cities', are perfect to actually see light of day since there is an actual countryside just a few walking minutes away from everyone's home. In modern mega cities with their urban sprawl and in every US city with their massive massive suburbs eating up all the countryside most people can't actually reach any "light" without buying and maintaining a car and then driving for an hour or two. We bulldozed the best farming land and stuffed everyone into sprawl developments not thinking for a second that this is unnatural for humans and leads to depression and anti social behaviour as well as destroying the relationship between the city and the countryside.

Not enough car parking in the city. You need to destroy most houses in the city with car parking spaces and highways.

@papaicebreakerii8180 Go to google maps. zoom in on any random US city, big or small, and compare the the massive size of the suburbs with the sometimes not even existing actual city in the center. There is no choice in the US. Most people are forced to live in suburbs because almost nothing else got build in the last 60 years. Building regulations and zoning laws prohibit any actual urban planning and only allow sprawl. That's why US cities have 10 times the area than european cities and european cities unfortunately are also heavily inflicted by sprawl. Modernism was a total failure on all front, from architecture to urban planning, modernism destroyed everything. The Leipzig Charta from 2007 is the first stepp away from modernism but the massive problems like sprawl and ugly developments will not go away. Most cities are ruined forever and people don't have a choice or say in the matter. Everything has to be a fight.

@DGARedRaven A city is just a collection of towns. There is no functional difference between them, they all need to provide for housing, work, school, shopping and public resources like fire brigade, medical care, police, government. History has proven that a neighbourhood of about 1km up to 1 mile in diameter is the perfect size for a settlement since it's walkable. You could live of the edge and still walk into the center in less than 10 minutes to do grocery shopping or go to school or work. If you have one such neighbourhood then it's a town (or if less densely populated it's called a village) and if you have many such neighbourhoods next to each other then it's a city and the neighbourhoods are then often called districts.

A fake Mainstreet that is neither a Street that goes anywhere (except to the parking moat around it) nor is it the main thing in the town (rather one of many shopping malls in the city). Why don't these people simply build a small town? walkable (1 mile diameter) with a real main street and a downtown high density mixed used area, a bit less density towards the outside... people 100 years ago knew how to do that, people a 1000 years ago knew how to do that...

basically 19th century european city planing had figured it all out. have a city center full of small to mid scale high density buildings with shops at the street level and one or two department stores. a market square in the city center for the weekly farmers market and the occasional festival or christmas market. also don't forget the train station and a park near by. but no... modernists had to reinvent the wheel and fuck it all up.

1. The diameter of a village or a town should not be more than 1 mile across. That way everyone can walk with ease anywhere within the village/town. 2. Build a main street or a market square or both. 3. Provide different option of housing like town houses, apartment houses, row houses and single family houses and always allow for mixed use. 4. Make sure there are shops, cafes, businesses, schools and all sorts of amenities in the center of the town. 5. And last but not least make it look pretty, this also includes walkable streets, narrow lanes, trees, beautiful traditional architecture and so on. Boom, you have a guaranteed winner and it's a million times better than suburban sprawl. It's not that difficult people. Get on it.
