1. The diameter of a village or a town should not be more than 1 mile across. That way everyone can walk with ease anywhere within the village/town.
2. Build a main street or a market square or both.
3. Provide different option of housing like town houses, apartment houses, row houses and single family houses and always allow for mixed use.
4. Make sure there are shops, cafes, businesses, schools and all sorts of amenities in the center of the town.
5. And last but not least make it look pretty, this also includes walkable streets, narrow lanes, trees, beautiful traditional architecture and so on.
Boom, you have a guaranteed winner and it's a million times better than suburban sprawl.
It's not that difficult people. Get on it.
