Since Brexit we have even had difficulty buying university course text books because they are normally in English and they get stuck in customs. If you don't order two months before the start of your course you will probably not get them in time. I had to give up a couple because of not being able to get the books. The EU has trashed Internet trading eg Ebay and Amazon. We are even getting hammered for charges if people send gifts. Being in the EU is a curse. EU membership also requires countries to apply Value Added Tax - the most inefficient and damaging tax ever invented. It has destroyed small businesses and street trading which is what migrants traditionally did. This has created a massive obstacle to integration. The EU was a good idea but it was taken over by idiots from the start and just goes on getting worse. There is no way of dislodging these people who run it due to the democratic deficit. It is also nice gravy train for the EU bureaucrats who get tax free salaries. That is why the EU is not popular.

  56. Putin is essentially historically correct about the origin of Ukraine within its present boundaries. It was devised by Stalin in the 1920s, and after 1945, bits were added on from Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. It is also the case that both the EU, the US and NATO has sought to extend their influence, which Russia sees as a threat, quite reasonably. None of which justifies the invasion, which looks like it is going to get dragged out in a prolonged and risky conflict, but it does not help in understanding to ignore how things look from the Russian perspective.

Finland has not been invaded. In fact, the Russians offered back Karelia, which the Russians took in 1940, but the Finns didn't want it. The Russians also tried to get rid of the former Königburg region of East Prussia but nobody would take it off their hands. Anyway, Putin has blown it because the Russians in Ukraine don't appreciate being targets for Russian forces.

The EU trade and economic policies have trashed the economies of the entire belt along the eastern borders of the EU, breaking ancient trading relationships. Cities like Daugavpils have become industrial wastelands. The huge RVR rolling stock factory in Riga lost much of its business. The populations of the Baltic countries has fallen since the Soviet break up; they were formerly the most prosperous regions of the USSR. Interfering in church affairs is religious persecution. These countries have not handled their Russians well.

I don't know what you mean by "trading partner", but trade takes place between people and companies, and having to ship goods over the sea adds to the costs of logistics This will always put suppliers in the UK at a disadvantage compared to those in Germany. That is one reason why it never made sense for the UK to join the EU. It doesn't help that the EU cripples its own economies with the Eurotax and import tariffs. Did you know that these policies were advocated in Mein Kampf and put into effect by Goering in 1934? The purpose of an economy is not to make stuff and flog it to foreigners.

  169. The idea is misguided in principle. Nicholas Kaldor, Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge advised against the common currency in the 1970s. The Swedish krona has sunk like a stone recently. Sweden would be in even bigger trouble if it had the Euro. The Euro is at least 10% undervalued for Germany, which means that Germans are working a day a week for nothing. The German motivation was mercantilist and therefore wrong. This has led to the dangerous situation of Germany having a persistent balance of payments surplus with the surplus consisting of bad debt, and the southern countries having a persistent deficit, also on borrowed funds. If these countries had continued to have their own currencies, with floating exchange rates, the trade imbalance would have corrected itself.   523. When the ground has dried out, it could be a different story. The Russians have their forces in place and will be able to spread out. There can be no winners in this conflict. It just needs to stop, and the warring parties got round a table. The Russian demands were not unreasonable: no EU, no NATO and a redrawing of Stalin's borders, which also include bits of Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. The Russian mistake was to step up the war. This is not a conflict outsiders should take a sides over.

  524. This shows how ludicrous the sanctions are. The economy of little Estonia has always been tightly linked to that of its neighbours. The Estonians need to understand the importance of rubbing along with the neighbours they depend on. Where did the missiles come from that landed in Pskov?
